03 / 7 Glorious Water - Natural Springs, Ponds, Fountians of Grant Park - Walking Tour Start: 10:00 am End: 11:30 am The Grant Park Conservancy is proud to be a "Preservation Partner" with the Atlanta Preservation Centers' " 7th Annual Phoenix Flies - A Citywide Celebration of Living Landmarks" (March 6-22, 2010) (www.preservaneatlanta.com) and is pleased to offer a series of walking tours and activities to help you understand and learn more about Atlanta's oldest public park. Glorious Water is the theme and title of a beautiful fountain in the park and this walking walking tour will focus on the importance of water and water features in the park. Learn about Lake Abana, Constitution Spring, Salaam Spring. the Judge John Erskine Memorial Fountain and more. There is no charge for our special tours but we will not discourage donations. Our Fort Walker Walkng Tour will focus on how and why a fort, built to defend the city from Sherman's advancing troups, came to be situated in Grant Park. Our Trees, Native Plants, Non Native Plants Walkng Tour will focus on identifying plants and speaking of their characteristics, likes and dislikes. You may even go home with a few ideas for your garden and landscape. Oh, and we will also visit some non native invasives so you know what to avoid in your landscape. There is no charge for our special tours but we will not discourage donations. Parking is free. 03 / 13 It Takes a Village to Care For and Maintain a Park - Work Day Start: 9:00 am End: 12:00 pm Join us for our First Saturday Work Day as we continue to prepare for Spring. Work tasks vary from month to month but can include planting, mulching, weeding, painting, removal of invasive plants, general clean-up and more. Tools are provided. Walker Start: 9:30 am End: 4:00 pm Built in 1863-64 as one of more than 20 earthen forts designed to protect the city from advancing Union forces, Fort Walker is one of the last remaining remnants. At the time, Atlanta was one of the most fortified cities in the world. Sherman and his armies were forced to change tactics in order to take the city. On Saturday, March 13, 2010. Ft. Walker comes alive with the living history and interpretive skills of Union and Confederate soldiers. Attendees will learn about uniforms, camp life, battlefield strategy and more. Watch soldiers construct a Chevaux de Frise and learn how it was used. Special presentations are scheduled at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m. but our Living History Guides will answer your questions, provide insight to life of a soldier and more. During your visit we hope you will take the time to visit the Atlanta Cyclorama to experience the Battle of Atlanta. more info

Walker Walking Tour Start: 10:00 am End: 11:15 am One of the last remaining defensive fortifications in a line of forts that were designed to protect the city from advancing Union forces in 1864, Ft. Walker is situated in the southeast corner of the park. While visiting the fort, we hope you take the time to go the Cyclorama. more info

By turning off non-essential lighting for one houe - EARTH HOUR - hundreds of millions of people across the globe will show their support for lasting action to protect Earth's natural resources, envionment and climate, now and into the future. Led by World Wildlife Fund, EARTH HOUR has grown from a city-wide effort n 2007 to a global phenomenon that has captured the world's attention. Each year, individuals, organizations, businesses and state and local government come together to show their support by turning off lights in homes, the workplace and at iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Las Vegas Strip, Sydney's Opera House and more. In 2009 alone, hundreds of millions of people turned out for EARTH DAY - spanning 4100 cities in 87 countries on seven continents. The Grant Park Conservancy is proud to be an official supporter of EARTH HOUR. We encourage you to join with us and millions of Americans in making EARTH HOUR 2010 the biggest effort yet.
